Butterflies John Abbot (1751–c. 1840), a native of England who came to America in 1776, painted more than 5,000 watercolors of the insects, birds, and plants of the Savannah River Valley. Trained as an artist, not as a scientist, Abbot supported himself by selling preserved specimens to collectors in the United States and abroad. Abbot sent 104 watercolors of butterflies and moths, with accompanying text, to James Edward Smith, founder and president of the Linnean Society of London. Smith published the collection in 1797 under the title The Natural History of the Rarer Lepidopterous Insects of Georgia. This calendar presents twelve of Abbot’s illustrations from that two-volume work. EAN: 9780764964442
